Data stewards are the “feet on the ground” for data governance, and understanding data governance is fundamental knowledge for effective stewardship. Governance is both the source of goals, priorities, and direction for data stewards and the environment in which data stewards operate. It establishes the authority and accountability structures that guide how data is defined, managed, and used. Governance practices establish the framework for stewards to guide policy compliance, standards, and best practices for data creation, management, and use. The combination of governance authority and stewardship practices help to establish both an environment and a culture where data is a managed, trusted, and shared organizational resource.

This 5-hour course provides an overview of the many dimensions, layers, and activities of data governance. The goal is to provide data stewards with the strong foundation of data governance knowledge that is needed to be successful. The course covers data governance components, goals, processes, and practices. And it describes the steps and activities needed to implement a successful data governance program starting from architecture and design, and leading to implementation and operations.
