Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become certified?

To earn CIMP designation you'll need to pass a total of five exams. Four of the exams must be within a CIMP discipline for which you seek certification, including the fundamentals exam for that discipline. The remaining elective exam may be selected from any CIMP discipline. The specific pages for various CIMP disciplines contain detailed Exam Charts.

You may, of course, earn CIMP designation in multiple disciplines. Exams taken towards certification in one discipline can be applied as electives toward certification in another. Exams that appear in multiple disciplines earn credit toward certification in all disciplines where they appear.

What are the costs?

To get started you'll need to complete a CIMP application that declares your intent to become certified, identifies the specialization(s) in which you seek to become certified, and provides information attesting that you meet the minimum requirements for work or study in the field. CIMP incurs an application fee of $150 per certification. You will have fifteen months to complete the required exams from the time you take the first one.

Beyond the application fee, your only costs to become certified are the fees that you incur for each course in which you enroll and each exam that you choose to take.

Am I required to take eLearningCurve courses to gain certification?

No. You are not required to take the eLearningCurve courses to receive CIMP certification. Passing of the requisite exames is the only academic requirement. However, the exam questions are tightly aligned with the material in the courses and most students will find it advisable to take the course to prepare for the examinations.

Is there a "final exam" required for a CIMP certificate?

No.

Is Re-certification Required?

Re-certification is essential to maintain a credible and meaningful certification. This is especially true in a continuously changing field such as information management. Each CIMP certificate expires three years from the date on which it is issued. Re-certification requires only that you demonstrate a meaningful level of continued activity - work, study, and learning - in the field. You can satisfy this requirement in a variety of ways including:

• 24 months of verifiable work experience in the specialty area with supporting recommendation from a manager, supervisor, or colleague.
• 90 hours of continuing professional education in the form of classroom training, conferences, and events related to the area of certification.
• 60 hours of continuing education in the form of additional eLearningCurve courses, where hours are determined by the duration of the recorded portion of the course. Our data shows that you'll spend 1.5 to 2 times this amount of time to actually complete a course.
• 90 hours of speaking, teaching, or professional presentation about topics in the specialty area including conference presentations and local chapter presentations to DAMA, CIPS, and other professional organizations.
• 6 non-commercial articles, columns, or papers in recognized information management publications.
• Publication of one text or guidebook related to the specialty area by a recognized commercial (non-vanity) publisher.
• Any combination of the above that collectively meets 100% of the requirement; for example 12 months of work experience (50%) combined with 60 hours of continuing professional education (50%).
